Chapter Ride - Sunday 9/12/2010

Missed ya'll who didn't show up.....
There we were - at 7AM in the McDonalds parking lot..
Spooks, Howard, Skinny, Trooper & Pappy - ready for our breakfast ride to Gila Bend.

Was a little chilly - actually welcomed a long-sleeved shirt.

some of the folks wo patronize McDonalds are quite interesting - not as interesting as Wal-Mart customers - but interesdting in their own way..
Watched a guy come out of the drive-thru with a bag of ice, poured a large cup of ice in his cooler, then deposited the rest of the bag by the trash can... gotta wonder what he was thinking...

anyway - about 7:18 we blasted south on Hwy 87/ 587 to the I10.
Crossed I10 onto the reservation and headed putt-putted along Casa Blanca / State Hwy 1 / Bapchute Road (same road - differeing designations... ). as we kept abotu the legal limit here (good thing) we passed a Native American Police cruiser sitting there with a speed gun...

At Hwy 347 we turned left toward the booming bedroom community of Maricopa... well - maybe it isn't booming any longer but there are still a lotta folks out there.

Took a right onto Hyw 238 and the Sonoran Desert National ..
also know as "dead-cow road".

We were lucky - narry a dead-cow (or live one) was on the shoulder or the pavement....

That 40 mile cruise toward Gila Bend is nice-n-easy....
the road is FANTASTIC - where Maricopa county maintains it - smooth and recent asphalt make a wonderful ride.....

The cacti and othere plants were in full green mode as the lizards n squirrels (?) sped across the road in front of our little group.
As the clouds burned off a little - it got a bit warmer - not at all unpleasant.

Arrived at the Space Age Resturant to fresh coffee, good service and hot tasty food.

Therer were a dozen border patrol agents in the place - we thanked them for their service and wished them good hunting... :-)

the ride back was uneventful (and that's good)... as we hit the I10 West bound - i suddenly realized i screwed up and went the wrong way.. oooo well....
a quick about-face at the first off-ramp and we were east-bound again.
75+ mph on the empty freeway was wonderful....
just crusing along - enjoying the morning. passed a couple trucks and one car - other than that - no traffic.

Exited and headed up 347 thru Maricopa (WATCH YOUR SPEED HERE!!!!)

spooks & Skinny continued up 347 toward home as Howard, Trooper & I turned east on Casa Blanca and up 587.
A quick right on SAN TAN road brought us back to Hwy 87 and the south end of Gilbert Ave.
Up Gilbert to Hunt Hwy and homeward bound....

ya'll missed a GREAT morning ride...

maybe next time we'll have more participation.....

be safe.. Pappy

we gonna ride or mess around all day.....

Ok - here we go...
thought i'd try this to post s a few blogs up here. id should let ya'll post comments and maybe have a bit of a discussion place. rather than sending emails or making phone calls...

maybe if i get brave we'll try Twitter -- but not this week....

anyway - just fyi...
last Saturday Spooks, Browz, Watcher, Trooper &your truly headed up to Pioneer for a breakfast session... I like the rustic place.. good CFS, tasty gravy, decent coffee - even if those little tin cups are kinda hot to hold.

Anyway - we assembled at Crismon & Southern - blasted outa there at 06:30.
headed West on I60, North then west on the Red Mountain 202 (btw - they construction is complete and the carpool lane is fully open between 101 & Gilbert rds).
Then north on the loop 101. Not many cagers in sight - a beautiful 85 degrees warm.
Just as we slid over to the carpool lane we saw an overhead sign "ROAD CLOSED AT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT".. hmm i thought - nothing about that closer on the DOT website yesterday. no crackberry alert from KTAR.. must be left over from last night.
A few miles later a second overhead sign proclaimed "ROAD CLOSED AT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT". dang i thought - that's probably not a coincidence...
As we meandered thru the S turns at SHEA blvd - a 3rd overhead sign blasted a triplicate message.
oo well - thinks I - we can take of at Bell, parallel the fwy and get back on at Princess...
WRONGO!!!!!

sure enough - DOT & HP had traffic cones laid out every 6 inches from Cactus to FLW exit. we pulled off and immediately found two lanes backed up to the off ramp.

Knowing the area we slide over to the right lane, made a right at FLW, went up to 100th, headed left and meandered up Thompson Peak Parkway. At Pima, made a right and headed for the Carefree Highway.
It'd been a year or so since i'd been up this way. but kinda knew where we were headed.
Beautiful ride up PIMA and on into downtown Cave Creek (dang me - i thought - guess we missed the left turn onto Carefree Highway).. ooo well
putt putted thru Cave Creek about 7 AM. guess that's a late morning / nighttime town - AINT NOTHIN OPEN - save Circle K & 7-11.
Saw one restaurant that was either open or selling 50 motorcycles in the parking lot. we chose not to stop but proceeded to Pioneer.

We looped around the downtown area and eventually ended up on Cave Creek road (imagine that) and Carefree Hwy. a right turn got us headed toward I17.
more nice -n-easy cruisin thru the morning sunshine as we watched warily for dump trucks / garage trucks and anything larger than a KIA suv......
-- for those that don't recall - this is the area where a dozen bikers were run over by a trash truck while sitting at a stop light)...

too soon we got to I17 - and headed north to the Pioneer exit.
pulled off and turned west, then into Pioneer...
hmm - that's odd -- the gate is closed....
sign says open 8AM on Sat.
whipped out the ol'crackberry, navigated to their website. yup - s/b open..
called the number - recording says they open at 6 AM on Sat. well not today.
maybe somebody overslept.

Spooks headed down the road to see about a back way in.
returned un-satisfied.
So he opened the big gate n rode up to the building.
"locked tighter than Danny's arz!" he relayed over the CB...
" I don't kow Danny", i clicked back, " and i aint gonna get the close to his ARZ - let's ride"

meantime 4 cagers had pulled up and were watching us - probly looking for the home-made Cinnamon rolls ,,,,
One brave cager pulled right up and asked what was up... so we explained...

turned out they were on their way to the airport - headed home to Chicago. They had dinner at Pioneer last night and loved it... wanted to enjoy a delicious breakfasts before having lunch at White Castle in Illinois.
They relayed a discussion from the previous night w/the owner at Pioneer.
State was shutting him down. something about a land sale - they weren't sure - and he had until Sunday to get off the property.
Well heck - says I -.. it's only Saturday......

we hemmed-n-hawed then headed south on I17 to the Carefree Hwy exit.
flipped a coin between THE GOOD EGG & Dennys... Dennys won.
decent food, good service, tasty coffee.... clean restaurant too....

uneventful trip home - I 17, 101 east/south. It was a dual trailer hay truck that had overturned on the 101 at Bell to shut down northbound traffic. At this point traffic was backup up to Shea blvd - it was 9:AM.
at Red Mountain we parted ways.... Spooks headed south with w/a yodel over the CB..
if you haven't had the pleasure - it's great to hear..

Long story short -by the time anyone says that, it's WAY too late - great ride, great company, decent food...

haven't found additional info about Pioneer -- if you do - pls lemme know
